All citizens are equal, but some are more equal than others

George Orwell, in his book “Animal Farm” quoted “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”.

The recent events occurring in our paradise island entice us into extrapolating this quote to “All citizens are equal, but some are more equal than others”

The social media has abundantly commented about a poor lady, Mrs. H.Poorun, being thrown out of her humble NHDC flat because she failed to pay the monthly installments for the said property.

Depending upon the type of house, the monthly installments range from Rs.2, 000 to Rs.4,000. A non payment for a period of one year might amount from Rs.24, 000 to Rs.48, 000.00.at most.

Now in our so called civilized world, our government lacks so much compassion that it has no hesitation to throw a poor lady out of her house, as she has financially defaulted.

On the other hand, we learn that the Maubank, financed by Rs.3 billion of our money, is planning to write off the debts of Mr.Rakesh Gooljaury amounting to an astronomic sum of Rs.565 million !!!!!

Shocking, you would say? Everybody being fond of this expression nowadays, but one should carefully consider the following:

What does differentiate Mrs.H.Poorun from Mr.R.Gooljaury?

Both are citizens of the sovereign state of Mauritius, born free, but why are the treatments so different in those two cases?

Agree that R.Gooljaury has the right contacts and he has agreed to sell his soul for money. But does that make him a citizen more equal than you and me, such that the whole country has to pay for his debts?

We all at some point in time did have loans or lease facilities, but did the bank or leasing companies write off our loans in case of nonpayment, or did they come out for your pound of flesh?

Where are the regulating bodies? The Bank of Mauritius?

Cry my beloved country, cry…
